NEW YORK, March 20, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The Labrador Retriever has once again taken the top spot in the American Kennel Club's (AKC®) 2018 ranking of the most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds in the U.S.

The Lab was also recognized as the #1 pup in Austin, Baltimore and Salt Lake City.

The biggest surprise in 2018 was the Shiba Inu, which had made a big move breaking into the top 10 in 2017 but dropped down to 19th last year Taking its place in the top 10 are Portuguese Water Dogs, which jumped from 19th to 10th.

"The Lab held onto the top spot in Seattle, but other athletic and intelligent breeds such as the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Poodle and German Shepherd Dog are gradually increasing in popularity," said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. "I wouldn't be surprised to see one of these other breeds take the top spot next year."

The AKC also announced its nationwide rankings today in a press conference at the AKC Museum of the Dog in NYC. The Labrador Retriever once again breaks records!  The loveable Lab remains the number one most popular breed in the United States for the 28th year.

While the Labrador Retriever continues its reign at the top, the German Shorthaired Pointer has been quietly climbing the charts over the past decade.  This versatile, all-purpose hunter came in at number nine in 2018 – it's highest position since becoming recognized in 1930.
