La Roche-Posay Publishes a Clinical Study Regarding a New Formula to Visibly Ease Signs of Rosacea-Prone Skin
Study shows that new formulation with Ambophenol, Neurosensine and La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water has positive effect in management of rosacea-prone skin
NEW YORK, Sept. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent study, published in the August 2013 issue of the well-respected and peer-reviewed Journal of Drugs in Dermatology demonstrated that a formula containing three key ingredients known for their soothing and antioxidant properties – Ambophenol, Neurosensine and La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water – effectively acts on visible redness in patients with rosacea-prone skin.
According to the National Rosacea Society (NRS), over 16 million Americans are afflicted with rosacea; and many of them are not even aware of it[1]. Beyond the detrimental cosmetic effects of the condition, those with rosacea must also deal with a decrease in quality of life, as it is often associated with pain sensations and hyper-reactivity to common triggers such as sun exposure as well as some foods and drinks. Moreover, in another study by the NRS, over 70% of patients with rosacea had a lower self-esteem due to their condition, potentially leading to anxiety, social phobias or depression[2].
In an effort to determine how to most effectively help those with rosacea-prone skin and offer long-term maintenance of the skin condition, La Roche-Posay Laboratoire Dermatologique conducted a study entitled "Management of Rosacea-Prone Skin: Evaluation of a Skincare Product Containing Ambophenol, Neurosensine and La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water as Monotherapy or Adjunctive Therapy."
The study explored the effect of a skincare formula with Ambophenol, Neurosensine and La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water, housed in hermetically-sealed, patented packaging (to minimize contamination and oxidation) on the management of rosacea-prone skin.
It tested the formula in three different therapeutic regimes: the first and second as a monotherapy, and the third as adjunctive therapy and maintenance after a Metronidazole treatment, the leading topical prescription for rosacea in the US. Of particular note was that in the monotherapy regime, there was significant efficacy associated with an excellent tolerance, and when tested as a maintenance treatment the formula helped prolong the efficacy of the Metronidazole drug treatment.
The tested formula contains three ingredients highlighted in the study that serve to significantly improve the signs of rosacea-prone skin:
- Ambophenol is a powerful natural extract of the Tambourissa Trichophyll, a plant found in Madagascar whose leaves are traditionally used in sedative and pain-relieving infusions. This powerful ingredient has been developed by pharmaceutical companies and is known for its ability to calm and soothe visible redness.
- Neurosensine is a dipeptide naturally present in the skin and has been tested to reduce sensations of discomfort; and
- La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water, which contains a high concentration of selenium with powerful antioxidant properties to help protect, refresh and soothe sensitive skin.
"The number one goal of the Rosacea patient is to appear less red in the mirror and to the world. In addition, most rosacea-prone skin types can demonstrate a defective skin barrier that contributes to the inflammatory cascade of Rosacea, making them highly reactive to environmental factors and traditional skin treatments and moisturizers," says dermatologist Dr. Neal Bhatia. "A product like La Roche-Posay Rosaliac AR Intense Localized Redness Intensive Care that offers 24-hour hydration can help reduce visible redness and sensations of discomfort, as well as rebuild a compromised barrier and provide an immediate cooling effect to ease skin upon contact."
While Rosaliac AR is not a drug that treats rosacea, it is part of La Roche-Posay's sensitive skin portfolio comprised of a variety of skincare products formulated to help improve the quality of life for those afflicted with sensitive skin conditions. These products help reduce the signs often associated with sensitive skin, including visible redness and discomfort. In addition to being guided by its decades of research on the nature and treatment of sensitive skin, La Roche-Posay employs a strict formulation charter for each and every one of its products. The ingredients used are carefully selected and only a small fraction of the hundreds of thousands of raw materials available are used. Every product undergoes special tolerance tests on sensitive skin and, where appropriate, is tested on atopic skin, the most sensitive of skin types. When tested on atopic skin, if even one subject displays irritation, the product is sent back for reformulation. La Roche-Posay products are allergy-tested and non-comedogenic.
