SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. (President and CEO: Kazuhiro Ikebe) and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Tatsuo Yasunaga) will conduct a joint pilot project to form a new service for Japanese residential customers coming off of FIT (feed-in tariff, a fixed price purchase of renewable energy). This pilot project uses batteries controlled and aggregated by Sunverge's Dynamic VPP (virtual power plant) software platform.
The anticipated service will lower customers' energy bills by using batteries to optimize self-consumption of rooftop solar-generated power. In addition, this pilot project will also contribute to increasing Kyushu Electric Power's technological understanding of controlling and aggregating residential batteries for deployment of a large-scale VPP implementation. Through this the utility aims to develop new businesses and services such as stabilization of power grid systems and actively promote innovation that delivers new value to customers.
"Residential distributed energy resources such as residential energy storage and EVs are key components in the energy grids of the future," said Martin Milani, CEO of Sunverge. "Utilities like Kyushu Electric Power are acting now to develop their technical understanding of VPPs and to help drive innovation towards the grid of the future while packaging new clean energy service offerings for their customers."
