Kuwait's Prime Minister Receives Vote of Confidence

KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait, Jan. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah has received an affirmation to continue in office from the Kuwaiti Parliament. In a closed session of Parliament, a majority of lawmakers voted against a "no-confidence" motion on the Prime Minister's tenure in office.

Sheikh Nasser has been in office since 2006. His term has been marked by the passage of the development plan, a large-scale effort to revolutionize Kuwait's infrastructure. Kuwait is known as one of the most democratic nations in the Gulf, with a Parliament that allows opposition and freedom of expression.

According to Kuwait Times, Prime Minister Nasser told the newspaper Alam Alyawm "democracy is not something we opt for when it meets our ends and shy away from it when it goes against our interests. True democracy is instilled in Kuwaiti politics, both leaders and subjects, and shall not be sacrificed." Sheikh Nasser also said he harbored no negative feelings for any party personally and respects all MPs and their opinions.

His Highness said he looks forward to positive and constructive cooperation with those who voted against him. He also called for a new era in political cooperation, with a renewed sense of purpose for the Kuwaiti people.
