Kuwaiti Partnership and Democracy Praised by British Prime Minister During Visit
KUWAIT CITY, Feb. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ahead of Kuwait's National Day and Liberation Day weekend, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah welcomed Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron during a visit in which the leaders discussed their country's mutual cooperation, along with such topics as development, national security and democracy.
"We are pleased to see you amongst us as we mark the 50th anniversary of independence, the 20th anniversary of liberation and 5th anniversary of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's assumption of power," said Sheikh Nasser. "Kuwait appreciates its long-standing ties with Britain and we look forward to further advancing these ties."
Relations between Kuwait and Great Britain date back two centuries and were solidified upon Kuwait's independence in 1961 and reinforced by the unconditional support of the British government during Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990-91.
During the visit, the leaders held talks that resulted in several agreements, including a deal between British Petroleum and Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, and a deal regarding the exchange of expertise on a peaceful nuclear program for Kuwait. Sheikh Nasser also called on the United Kingdom to invest in Kuwait's ambitious development plan, which would cost around KD 37 billion (around $114 billion).
After having met with a number of Kuwaiti officials, the British leader expressed his admiration of the political and economic progress made by Kuwait. "I've been impressed by what I saw at the National Assembly. It was very interesting to go and to have meetings with the Speaker and some of the Members of Parliament…" Prime Minister Cameron continued: "[Kuwait's] commitment to increased political and economic openness and the gradual development of a liberal and open society…will lead to a stronger, better Kuwait and to an ever-closer partnership between our nations."
