Kuwait Premier Chairs Meeting on Relief Aid Amid Regional Unrest
KUWAIT CITY, May 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah chaired the 38th meeting of the Arab Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO) Executive Committee. During the event, Sheikh Nasser was honored with the presentation of a memorial shield in appreciation of his support for civil and welfare groups. The shield was offered by attending groups including the Arab Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS).
Addressing the Executive Committee, KRCS Chairman Barjas Al-Barjas stressed the importance of bolstering cooperation among relief and aid organizations as the Arab world experiences continued challenges. Al-Barjas noted that relief aid personnel need to step up efforts and work to ensure help is continually delivered to those in need.
ARCO Secretary General Abdullah Al-Hazz'a also noted that a major issue considered was the ongoing situation of the Palestinian people. Al-Hazz'a urged neighboring Arab governments to ramp up relief efforts in all parts of the region that have experienced distress.
Kuwait has continued to provide humanitarian assistance throughout the ongoing violence in the region. According to Global Humanitarian Assistance, Kuwait contributed $221 million in humanitarian aid from 2000-2009, making it the fourth-largest non-Development Assistance Committee (DAC) donor in this period.
