PITTSBURGH, May 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Kroff, Inc., one of the fastest-growing water treatment companies in the United States, is pleased to announce that David Grottenthaler, general manager of Kroff Well Services (KWS), Inc., will serve as a conference speaker during the 44th Annual Pittsburgh Chemical Day on May 10, 2011 at the Omni William Penn Hotel. Grottenthaler's presentation will focus on water treatment quality for safe and effective reuse of frac water in the Marcellus Shale.

"Some of the largest gas and oil drilling companies in the nation have set up shop here in Pennsylvania, which is a clear indicator of the depth of gas reserves in the Marcellus Shale. This also represents tremendous economic opportunity for all kinds of businesses in our region," Grottenthaler said. "At the same time, oil and gas companies are required to comply with environmental regulations in terms of handling and disposal of production water and flowback. Kroff has the technologies and solutions to ensure that companies are environmentally compliant, and I'm looking forward to sharing my knowledge with attendees during Pittsburgh Chemical Day."
Grottenthaler's presentation is titled "High Rates/High Volume Shale Gas Fracturing: Development of Frac Fluid Designs and Flowback Remediation Strategies for Reuse." During the presentation, Grottenthaler will discuss fluid design formulation and water treatment quality for safe and effective reuse of frac water. He will also offer reasons for reuse; discuss the technologies, chemistries and remediation strategies currently being employed; and provide analytical proof to support safe reuse. Reusing flowback and produced waters rather than releasing this water back into the environment should prove to be a key enabler to the Marcellus Shale development.
Grottenthaler has three decades of experience in water and wastewater treatment for a variety of industries and now focuses his efforts on frac fluid designs and water remediation for reuse in the oil and gas industry. His knowledge of fluid design formulation and water treatment quality for safe and effective reuse of frac water provides a dual perspective from both sides of critical water issues. Grottenthaler has invented frac fluid design chemistries, which offer environmental and effective approaches to the shale gas extraction process. These chemicals are patented and have received national and international awards.
Pittsburgh Chemical Day is the largest, premier one-day event held in the industry. This year's event will focus on the inherent ties between the chemical and energy industries.
