"I look forward to joining NASBE, an association whose work in assisting and representing state boards is a vital component of public education," Amundson said. "It's no secret that states are the centers of education innovation in this country, and citizen participation has long played an important part in furthering and fostering these advances. NASBE's board of directors has honored me with this appointment, and I look forward to working with state board members on the issues they find most critical."
"Kris has more than 25 years of experience in shaping policy at both the state and local levels, and she has a keen understanding for and appreciation of how state policymaking bodies function," said NASBE President Patrick Guida. "I believe she will be successful in both providing leadership and functioning as an integral part of our team."
Prior to joining the Education Sector in 2009, Amundson represented the 44th District in the Virginia General Assembly from 1999-2009. During that time, she was a member of Virginia's P–16 Council and the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) and was active in SREB's Adolescent Literacy Committee. Before successfully running for an Assembly seat, Amundson—a former teacher— served for nearly a decade on the Fairfax County, Va., School Board, including two years as its chairwoman. There, she was the leading advocate for bringing the International Baccalaureate program to the county.
Amundson is the mother of one daughter, a lawyer in Washington, D.C. She is the co-founder of La BECA (Bringing Education, Compassion, and Assistance) Women's Scholarship Foundation.
The National Association of State Boards of Education represents America's state and territorial boards of education. NASBE exists to strengthen State Boards as the preeminent educational policymaking bodies for citizens and students. For more, visit www.nasbe.org.
