KPMG Silicon Valley Office Achieves LEED Certification
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Silicon Valley office of KPMG LLP, the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm, has been certified in Leadership and Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for its commercial interiors.
The LEED Green Building Rating System for Commercial Interiors is a set of performance standards for certifying a building's design and construction in order to promote healthy, durable, affordable, and environmentally sound practices in tenant space design and construction.
"Achieving Silver LEED certification is part of a plan that began when we selected our new Mission Towers location, which conforms with KPMG's firmwide 'Green' initiative to reduce its carbon footprint," said Tim Zanni, KPMG Silicon Valley office managing partner. "For example, the office building is located within an easy walk of public transportation and other services."
In December of 2011, KPMG relocated its Silicon Valley office to five floors in Mission Towers I on Freedom Circle in Santa Clara. The 12-story Mission Towers is owned and managed by Equity Office Properties. KPMG's office space was built out according to a comprehensive plan that achieved significant reductions to obtain LEED certification:
- 54 percent reduction in water use (exceeding the minimum of 20 percent), therefore reducing the burden on the local municipal water supply and wastewater systems.
- 35 percent reduction in Lighting Power Density (a measure of electrical power used to provide lighting to a space), thereby reducing the environmental and economic impact of excessive energy use.
- 30 percent reduction in energy cost by modeling the heating and air conditioning system for the tenant space based on a heating and cooling load analysis of the building.
In addition, 92 percent of the installed equipment was Energy Star rated. The build out used furniture and finishes, as well as paints, coatings and other chemicals with low Volatile Organic Compounds to increase indoor air quality. A comprehensive plan to store and collect recyclables has been implemented.
