KPMG's Efforts to Focus on Enhancing Literacy; Hernandez Joins KPMG Chairman and CEO Lynne Doughtie in First Public Appearance at WE Day in New York
NEW YORK, April 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- KPMG LLP, the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm, today announced it is teaming with WE, an organization that brings people together and gives them the tools to change the world, and tapping U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Laurie Hernandez to build future leaders passionate about driving social change. Aligning with KPMG's commitment to make a tangible difference in the communities where its people live and work, the firm's efforts will focus on enhancing its literacy-building initiatives in the United States, where 32 million people have currently reached adulthood without ever learning to read.

WE Day events across the country bring thousands of young people who serve in their communities together to celebrate their efforts and inspire them to change the world. KPMG will introduce these young people to the critical importance of literacy and encourage them to get involved with literacy-building efforts in their communities through WE.
Hernandez will serve as the firm's literacy champion and speak at WE Day events alongside KPMG leaders. She is a strong advocate for the cause, citing her love for reading as a major reason for her success.
"KPMG's commitment to making a tangible difference in our communities is a long-standing value," said Lynne Doughtie, Chairman and CEO, KPMG LLP. "Through our relationship with WE and efforts with Laurie, we're amplifying our lifelong learning initiatives by advancing literacy and building future leaders."
Hernandez joined Doughtie on stage at Thursday's WE Day event in New York at Radio City Music Hall to champion literacy and encourage audience members to share "The Book That" changed their lives, using the hashtag #TheBookThat on social media. For every use of the hashtag during WE Day, KPMG will donate a new book to a child in need who might not otherwise have access, up to 5,000 books.
KPMG's commitment to literacy includes the following milestones:
- KPMG's Family for Literacy (KFFL) program established in 2008.
- More than three million books – and counting – provided to children in need through KFFL.
- Over three million dollars raised by KPMG people to purchase new books for children in low-income communities.
- Thousands of volunteer hours donated by KPMG people and the extended KPMG family to support the cause.
