KPMG Announces Affiliation With The Data Science Institute at Columbia University
Relationship kicks off new collaboration of renowned data scientists
NEW YORK, Nov. 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- KPMG announced today that it has joined the Industry Affiliates Program at the Data Science Institute (DSI) at Columbia University. The Institute develops technology to unlock the power of global data to help solve some of society's most challenging problems, while educating the next generation of data scientists.
KPMG data scientists will team with some of the world's leading faculty and students in data science at DSI to develop innovative solutions for client challenges and promote interdisciplinary research that advances both theory and application.
"KPMG's relationship with the Data Science Institute at Columbia University reflects the firm's commitment to delivering world-class data and analytics capabilities to our clients," said Brad Fisher, partner and U.S. leader of Data & Analytics at KPMG. "We're looking forward to the collaboration and to tapping in to the DSI's in-depth academic research capabilities."
KPMG will contribute to DSI's curriculum by offering mentors to DSI students and capstone project ideas, where students take what they've learned throughout the course of their graduate program and apply it to examine a specific area of focus. KPMG will also have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on research, particularly if there is an intersection with industry applications.
The firm will also engage in the education process to ensure that students emerge with the capabilities to work in industry by providing a practical perspective to the students' education.
At the same time, the DSI will enable KPMG to team with a wide range of leading academic luminaries in data science to help inform its own client engagements.
"We look forward to collaborating with KPMG to develop new data science tools," said Sharon Sputz, director of strategic programs at DSI. "We are also thrilled that our students will gain real-world experience by working with KPMG data scientists directly. We depend on relationships like this to prepare our students for the changing needs of a rapidly evolving industry."
DSI consists of seven centers and two working groups, which focus on cybersecurity, health and financial analytics, new media, smart cities, gathering, storing and analyzing sensor data, and developing the tools to analyze large data sets.
