A Closer Look at Komax
Komax Systems offers a diverse line of static mixers and heating devices for use in industrial processes all over the world. Their list of satisfied customers across the gamut truly reads like a "Who's Who" of international businesses.
"We like to think that we're in the service business," said Tory Turner Sales Support/Marketing. "We adapt to our customers' changing needs with an energy-saving, environmentally conscious product line that profiles not only our customers but the welfare of the general public."
One of those services Komax provides is ensuring their customers have better technology for potable water, desalination and wastewater processing. Originally their Hi-Pass Sludge Mixer used in wastewater processing, but the innovative company recognized a brand new need, and as a result, modified it for use in the oil sands field as the Hi-Pass Produced Water Mixer.
Meeting Standards with Energy-Efficiency
With the oil extraction processes from oil sands comes an initial high water demand and leaves a contaminated aqueous by-product. Governmental regulations required the handling of the leftover water, sand and clay mix, known as tailings, to be reclaimed rather than settling slowly in ponds. The oil industry had to have this done inexpensively in order to make their efforts worthwhile. Calling on Komax's expertise, both demands were met. Without motors to run compressors and with no moving parts in the mixers, the Hi-Pass™ Produced Water Mixer became an efficient and reliable solution.
"Since we developed this product, we've installed hundreds of these for the oil industry to meet new regulations," said Nolan Smith/Sr. Applications Specialist.
How Does it Work?
When you mix a polymer with the clay slurry, you induce a chemical reaction to remove the effluent tailings. This adaptive approach results in no fouling, which complies with the need to reduce tailing ponds and their carbon footprint. The entire approach, though, relies on the right equipment, which is where the Komax Hi-Pass mixer comes in.
"We've developed a solution that can be fitted for any size and material to any pipeline," said Nolan Smith/Sr. Applications Specialist. "It's one of the reasons it's such an important product in today's market."
