Kognitio Moves To A Free Licensing Model To Meet The Need For An In-memory Analytical Platform Atop Hadoop Environments
Company now gives away free, full-feature perpetual use licenses up to 128GB for use in the cloud or on-premises - enables Big Data analytics for organizations of any size
NEW YORK, Oct. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Kognitio, driving the convergence of in-memory analytics, Big Data and cloud computing, today announced it is allowing companies to download a fully functional copy of its software at no charge, and with no time restrictions.
By doing so, Kognitio is making it possible for industry solutions vendors, entrepreneurs, and large and small enterprises to gain insight from Big Data, unifying an "information anywhere" approach where data can sit in a conventional data warehouse, Hadoop cluster, or any other standard persistence environment and be available for analysis in real time.
Kognitio made the announcement today in New York City at the O'Reilly Strata and Hadoop World conference, where it is an Exabyte sponsor. The company said it is offering a full-featured, perpetual use license of up to 128 gigabytes without an expiration period or other limited functions normally found in "trialware." That capability gives companies the ability to do in-memory analytics on, for example, more than 500 million customer records at once.
It said that companies will be able to download and use the software from the Amazon Web Services MarketPlace™ for use in the cloud, and the Informatica MarketPlace, for download of the on-premise software to run on industry-standard x86 servers – that same computing environment used by the Apache Hadoop open source software.
"From our experience, more than half of all organizations indicate that capital expenditure is a hurdle to implementing analytical databases," said John Myers, senior analyst for Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing at Enterprise Management Associates. "This approach by Kognitio removes that hurdle to implementation, by allowing companies to add an analytical environment to an existing Big Data environment without incurring any software licensing costs. It truly represents a risk-free opportunity."
The software will enable those organizations to perform intense, unlimited in-memory analytics using its RAM-based processing delivering results as much as 10,000 times faster than technologies that require traditional spinning disk.
"For some firms, this will be all they need to perform the kind of deep-dive analysis required in today's market," said Steve Millard, Kognitio president and chief executive officer. "Other, larger companies will be able to use Kognitio to accelerate their existing business intelligence environment to better enable ad-hoc analysis on Big Data in real time. Either way, we believe that once they experience the power of in-memory analytics and the ease of use Kognitio delivers, they will come back to us for more." Millard noted that the 128-gigabyte restriction for the free-to-use software only relates to the amount of RAM memory available at a single time.
Millard said that the announcement, an industry first, will allow Kognitio to expand its rapid rate of revenue growth, as additional capacity and technical support will be provided, but at an additional charge.
"The emergence of Hadoop as a primary platform for storing, processing, managing and analyzing the volume, velocity and variety of data necessitates an analytical platform layer," said Paul Groom, Kognitio Chief Innovation Officer. "Those stresses around your data warehouse are not 'growing pains', but signs of 'old age' – Kognitio provides that universal connection layer between any kind of data persistence and any BI or application interface business users increasingly prefer."
