Kobre & Kim Enhances Firm's Asia Investigative And Disputes Capabilities With Shanghai Office
SHANGHAI, Oct. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Global disputes and investigations law firm Kobre & Kim announces its continued expansion in Asia with an office in Shanghai and the addition of another former U.S. Department of Justice prosecutor to the firm, further boosting its capabilities for handling investigations and joint venture disputes related to Asia. This is the firm's third office in Asia, following the opening of offices in Hong Kong in 2010 and Seoul in 2015.
China-focused disputes and investigations lawyers Shaun Z. Wu and Nan Wang will be resident in Kobre & Kim's Shanghai office. Mr. Wu — a Mandarin and Cantonese speaker with a law degree from Oxford University — focuses on international joint venture disputes and government investigations involving China. In addition to his qualifications as an English solicitor and U.S.-licensed lawyer, Mr. Wu is also admitted to practice law in the British Virgin Islands and works closely with Kobre & Kim's BVI office in handling the many China-related matters in that jurisdiction. Ms. Wang is a Shanghai native with a law degree from China, focusing on China-related investigations.
In addition, former U.S. Department of Justice prosecutor Wade Weems recently joined the firm's Washington DC office to focus on the firm's growing number of Asia-related matters. Mr. Weems expects to relocate to the Shanghai office upon approval from the appropriate authorities in China. With Mr. Weems' relocation, Kobre & Kim will have four former U.S. prosecutors working in Asia, among its Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul offices.
"We provide two specialized offerings through our Shanghai Office: an on-the-ground team focused on investigations for multinational companies with operations in China and expertise in China–foreign joint venture disputes involving multiple jurisdictions, in particular Hong Kong, BVI, Cayman Islands and other offshore jurisdictions," Mr. Wu said.
Firm co-founder Michael S. Kim, the only former U.S. Department of Justice prosecutor in Seoul, is closely involved with the firm's China matters and the opening of the Shanghai office. Mr. Kim noted that "China is a key part of our Asia business and the demand for our specialized offerings in international disputes and investigations has been growing substantially in recent years."
Asian Legal Business included Kobre & Kim on its 2017 Innovation List and named the firm as "Anti-Corruption Firm of the Year" in the China Business Law Awards last year. Chambers Global has recognized Kobre & Kim as a leading firm for Corporate Investigations/Anti-Corruption in China and noted that the firm is "renowned for its personalised service and discreet approach to highly sensitive matters."
