NEW YORK, Nov. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Recent rules issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation have been enacted to protect airline passengers, some of which include new "lost luggage" regulations. Airlines were already required to compensate passengers for loss, damage or delay in the arrival of passenger baggage. Now, airlines are legally required to refund any additional fees that were charged for carrying a bag for all segments of a trip.

If luggage goes missing after a flight, passengers should file a claim while still at the airport and get a copy of any forms that are filed. The airlines' baggage liability on domestic flights is capped at $3,300 per person. The airlines' baggage liability on international flights varies. Many airlines don't cover items in luggage such as electronics, jewelry and other valuables. If you must bring these items check the airline's website ahead of time, or take them with you in your carry-on luggage.
