Kintetsu Department Store Chain in Japan Chooses Teradata to Provide Enterprise Intelligence
Data integration consolidates data marts for merchandising and marketing information
TOKYO, March 8 /PRNewswire/ --Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world's largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, today announced that Kintetsu Department Store Co., Ltd. of Japan has completed the implementation of a Teradata enterprise data warehouse (EDW). The integrated, centralized database system supports the operation of a software-based solution called the Retail Template, developed by Teradata Japan Limited, which manages the relationship with Kintetsu.

The centralized Teradata platform integrates detailed customer and merchandise information previously handled by multiple independent systems, enabling a cross analysis of the information to support more customer-centric, finely-tuned merchandise planning and marketing activity. The Retail Template (RT) software produces reports and meeting materials for sharing across the company for review at any time, to enhance information literacy, improve operational efficiency and speed decision-making. The RT includes a Private Portal which displays standardized information, including sales reviews, yet also allows each business user of the Teradata system to customize and store the analysis patterns and information for further retrieval and use. This desktop feature is important to personnel from top management across the business to front-line staff, who have immediate visibility to relevant data – and can be highly productive and accurate in their merchandise and marketing initiatives. The system is now used by about 2,000 Kintetsu employees.
Prior to the installation of the Teradata system, Kintetsu had multiple disparate databases with no uniform information infrastructure sufficient to make a comprehensive merchandise analysis based on relevant customer needs. The Teradata information system tracks, manages and reports quickly in response to changes in consumer buying behavior.
After evaluating several database systems Kintetsu selected Teradata because of its established track record of success and expertise in the retail industry, according to a spokesperson with Kintetsu. He added that Teradata's retail consulting services offered Kintetsu a wealth of experience and first-ranked technology for processing huge volumes of changing, dynamic data.
Teradata's consulting and professional services extended beyond data warehouse system-building into organizational restructuring, so that business users could make full use of the new information infrastructure. This has included cross-departmental workshops to ensure efficient information sharing and decision-making across the business. Thus, Teradata provided two-pronged support that helped not only build an environment to encourage information utilization, but also has helped ensure more precise and relevant information. As a result, users have been ready and able to make the most efficient use of the intelligence for marketing.
Kintetsu's newly-organized merchandising division also uses the Teradata system – to analyze buying patterns by customer age group and residential location to fine-tune merchandise strategy and customer service for each of the communities and customer segments covered by thirteen outlets in the Kinki region and other areas. Kintetsu's flag-ship Abeno store will be reopened with much wider floor space when the Abenohashi Terminal Building is completely rebuilt in 2014, and the Teradata system data will be used to develop the best approach to planning, merchandising and reopening the new store.
More specifically, the Retail Template is a suite of analytics applications developed by Teradata Japan on the basis of its accumulated experience and expertise working with Japanese retail customers. The RT is designed to optimize the performance of the Teradata database system. RT's common components have been standardized and modularized so its users do not have to build a system from scratch but can develop and customize the data analytics environment needed for their business initiatives quickly and economically.
There are four standard modules for department store chains; the Personal Portal, the Merchandizing Template, the Customer Template and the Cross Analysis of Merchandise/Customer Information. The implementation of the RT solution requires Teradata hardware, database and the application server. The RT solution is also available for mail-order/e-commerce companies and mass-merchandisers. It is already used by eight companies in Japan, a spokesperson from Teradata Japan said.
