FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., April 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Kingston Public School District has been serving local communities in southern Oklahoma for decades, and today has more than 1,350 students in pre-K through 12th grade across four campuses. After dealing with a vandalism crime that cost an estimated $20,000-$30,000, the district decided it needed better coverage for all their campuses and turned to D-Link to implement state-of-the-art IP cameras, storage solutions and video management software to enable a safer learning environment – a solution that began deterring mischief right away.
"The security cameras are doing their job and, when questioned, the students give up information pretty easily," said Bill Wolff, director of technology, Kingston Public School District. "Our IP surveillance solution has helped us resolve a lot of issues. And the color images are clear enough that we can see a lot of detail – even from far away."
Kingston went through several rounds of vendor evaluations and end-user walk-throughs before learning about D-Link from Preferred Technology Solutions. The district had looked into network cameras a few years prior, but the price quotes were always out of range. The combination of camera quality and price led Kingston to work with D-Link on a product demonstration for the school board.
"We learned that D-Link sells a great product for a much lower cost than some of the other big camera companies, so we had to ask ourselves 'why spend a thousand more dollars per camera than we need to?'" said Wolff. "Another big selling point was D-Link's five-year warranty on many of the cameras. I also knew we would get great after-sale support, because I had already experienced it during our initial trial period."
Kingston moved forward with installing an initial 160 IP cameras and SAN storage, plus Video Insight for video management software, and within three weeks had all four campuses completely outfitted with new IP surveillance technology, making its vision a reality. Soon after the initial installation, Kingston added 12 more cameras to the mix and that number may soon increase again – in the next few years, the district plans to build a new middle school to accommodate student growth.
"I don't think we could have done a lot of what we did without D-Link's help," said Wolff. "They came to the rescue quite often and today the system is running great – I haven't had to even touch it in 18 months. It's 95 percent maintenance-free and I don't have to worry about it at all. From a technical director's standpoint, it's absolutely perfect."
