CINCINNATI, April 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- From a recycling partnership with Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden to fresh vegetables, herbs and honey grown on site, Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center at the University of Cincinnati is committed to eco-friendly initiatives. Starbucks Recycling Initiative

On Feb. 11, the Cincinnati Zoo began collecting discarded coffee grounds from the hotel's on-site Starbucks and lobby bar, restaurant and banquet operations to ensure they are saved and used as compost. Because coffee grounds have a low pH, they are excellent for neutralizing alkaline soil. Since collection began, the compost pile has accumulated nearly half a ton of discarded grounds and will be growing fresh plant life in the near future.

Renovated Guest Rooms with Recycled Materials

Kingsgate Marriott recently completed their guest room renovation that includes recycled materials for furnishings, energy-efficient HVAC systems, paint low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and recycling bins. In addition, all rooms feature water-conserving toilets, toilet paper and shower heads.

On-site Organic Gardening

Many of the culinary delights prepared at this hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio, are composed of ingredients from the hotel's on-site gardens. The head chef only uses the freshest vegetables and herbs as well as seasonal ingredients. The accommodations also boast rooftop bee hives, home to more than 200,000 honey bees since their establishment in February 2012. The bees can produce up to 200 pounds of honey per year which is being used on property in food offerings and drinks serve at the Bearcat Lounge and Caminetto restaurant.
