Roundtable Discussion to Focus on Importance of Sensible Gun Safety Measures in Fight To Reduce Gun Violence; 79 Percent of Washingtonians Support Life-Saving Background Checks

ISSAQUAH, Wash., Aug. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A survivor of the Seattle Jewish Federation shooting in 2006 and a father whose son was killed by gun violence will join with Mayor Frisinger and local gun violence prevention advocates for a roundtable discussion in Issaquah on Tuesday aimed at finding gun safety solutions to keep communities safe. Participants at the roundtable will discuss the toll of gun violence on families and measures to keep guns out of dangerous hands, including the expansion of background checks to private sales. Polling shows 79 percent of Washingtonians support comprehensive background checks. 

It remains far too easy for criminals, domestic abusers, and the seriously mentally ill – people who know they can't pass a background check – to skirt the law and obtain guns by purchasing them online or at gun shows, where background checks are not required under federal law. Participants will urge lawmakers to close these dangerous loopholes by supporting bipartisan background check legislation in both chambers of Congress.
