The science team generates photos, videos, news updates and scientific papers from each research location giving users an immersive experience into the state of the planet's corals. The Foundation needed a solution to display it all in an interactive way and turned to Reading Room to design the site and create a custom media aggregator.
The site uses powerful visual imagery from the Foundation's film production unit as well as photographic partners like International League of Conservation Photographers. to connect users to the ocean and to convey the breathtaking array of life found on coral reefs.
The site also houses a custom built reef map viewer developed by GISi. For each remote location that the science team surveys the Foundation builds a detailed habitat map of the reef. The map viewer contains video files that are geo-referenced so that users can see exactly what a specific section of reef looks like. The viewer also has a special habitat analysis tool that allows users to select an area of reef and discover what it is made of, be it coral, sand, algae or rubble among many other habitat types.
The Global Reef Expedition is in its third year and will continue until 2016. The new website greatly supports the Foundation's mission to freely share its findings and scientific reports, and to promote the mission of coral research and ocean conservation.
Executive Director of the Foundation, Capt. Philip Renaud, said "We are delighted with the look and functionality of our new website and we look forward to working with our site partners as we continue on the next three years of the Global Reef Expedition."
