PORTLAND, Maine, July 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Kepware Technologies, a software development company focused on communications for automation, today announced a $10,000 donation to the Morison Memorial School, an elementary school in Corinth, Maine. With its headquarters in Portland, Kepware is committed to the advancement of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and workforce development in Maine and abroad. The donation will enable Morison Memorial School to integrate reliable technology into its third, fourth, and fifth grade curriculums.
"The need for technical talent in the state of Maine has never been greater," said Tony Paine, CEO, Kepware. "Now in its second year, Kepware's school grant contest continues to help alleviate the technology gap by providing students with the tools they need to excel in the classroom. Early access to technology allows students to develop a strong foundation of technical skills and inspires them to explore their creative talents in STEM-focused fields."
This year's contest received more than a dozen nominations from educational programs located and operating in the state of Maine. Applicants were evaluated on a one-page essay detailing how the grant would improve educational opportunities for their students.
Fifth grade math teacher, Deborah Dearborn, submitted Morison Memorial School for the grant because she was concerned that her students could not adequately prepare for an upper-level educational experience. With limited access to technology, students were required to share one to four desktop computers between classrooms of 70 students. An investment in the next generation of STEM talent in Maine, the grant from Kepware will ensure that Morison students have access to the tools they need to bolster their technical education and experience.
"It is vital to have technology available in the classroom so that students can practice and master basic computer skills," said Dearborn. "While it may seem like computers are ubiquitous in Maine homes, the reality is that many students only have the opportunity to access them during school hours. By receiving this grant from Kepware, we can ensure that all of our fifth graders have an equal opportunity to learn these foundational skills and better prepare them for the future."
