Kentucky's NPLEx Technology Making Significant Progress
Point-Of-Sale System Blocks Illegal Pseudoephedrine Sales But Protects Lawful Purchase
LUTHERVILLE, Md., Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) today highlighted the latest results achieved by Kentucky's real-time, stop-sale pseudoephedrine (PSE) tracking system.
The National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) system automatically blocks unlawful pseudoephedrine purchases at the point of sale and helps flag meth offenders for law enforcement. Police officers and narcotics agents often set up NPLEx "watch lists" that notify them via email when a meth suspect attempts to make a PSE purchase. The most recent NPLEx data show that in Kentucky, the technology has blocked the sale of 29,568 boxes of medicine containing pseudoephedrine since the start of 2014, keeping 75,703 grams out of the hands of potential meth criminals.
Additionally, Kentucky sold 11.98 percent fewer boxes of PSE compared to the same period in 2013. The number of individual purchasers was further reduced by 10.16 percent.
Kentucky's NPLEx system works in concert with the state's meth offender block list, which prohibits meth offenders from being able to purchase PSE-based medicines. Together, the technologies have helped produce a significant decline in meth lab incidents over the past two years.
"NPLEx has been in use in Kentucky for several years," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of NADDI, "and it continues to help law enforcement officials track down and arrest criminals. NPLEx also helps Kentucky retailers by automatically blocking unlawful purchases at the point of sale. The recent decline in meth labs across the commonwealth is proof positive that this technology and the meth offender block system are both working extremely well. That's good news for all concerned citizens and it's a testament to the hard work of the Kentucky law enforcement community."
