LOUISVILLE, Ky., Dec. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Kentucky Health Cooperative, Inc., a nonprofit health insurer that will be governed by its members, today announced the outcome of its first-ever election of Board of Director seats. Two health plan members, Charles D. Black Jr. and Dr. Ashley Peak, have been elected to serve on the Board of Directors.
Dr. Ashley Peak from Louisville was elected to a three-year term. Dr. Peak is a board-certified psychiatrist who is in private practice.
Charles D. Black Jr., from Mt. Vernon, Ky., was elected to a two-year term. Mr. Black has served as the CFO of several Kentucky hospitals and was a member of the board of the Kentucky Hospital Insurance Corporation for eight years.
Joseph E. Smith, Chairman of the Board of Directors, said that over 4,900 votes were cast. Dr. Peak and Mr. Black received the highest number of votes, accepted in writing, by telephone and online.
Dr. Peak and Mr. Black will officially join the board on January 16, 2015. The rules of a Consumer Oriented and Operated Plan, or health insurance CO-OP, whose start-up and solvency is funded by loans issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as authorized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, require CO-OPs to transition from a formation board to an operational board of directors in which all Board members are elected to serve by the CO-OP's members over a two-year process.
"We are eager to begin working with Mr. Black and Dr. Peak," said Leon Mooneyhan, Ph.D., a Board member and chairman of the Nominating Committee.
The next election, to fill additional seats on the board, will be conducted in the fall of 2015.
"Member governance is what helps set health insurance cooperatives apart from for-profit health insurers," said Janie Miller, Chief Executive Officer of Kentucky Health Cooperative. "There is nothing more important than lending a voice, as we are deeply committed to and excited to be evolving as an organization with this new model for healthcare in the Commonwealth of Kentucky."
