WASHINGTON, Sept. 14, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Family Research Council (FRC) announced today that Kim Davis, the Kentucky County Clerk who was jailed after declining to issue same-sex marriage licenses, will be honored with the "Cost of Discipleship Award" at the Values Voter Summit on Friday evening, September 25.
Last week, FRC President Tony Perkins met with Davis just prior to her release from jail and invited her and her attorney, Liberty Counsel's Mat Staver, to attend the 10th annual Summit, which will be held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C.
Mariam Ibraheem, the Sudanese Christian woman who was sentenced to death for apostasy and spent months in a notoriously rank Sudanese prison with her toddler son and newborn daughter, was the recipient of last year's inaugural "Cost of Discipleship Award."
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins made the following comments in announcing the plans to honor Kim Davis:
"We are pleased to announce that Kim Davis will be honored at this year's Values Voter Summit. After meeting with her last week, I can tell you that Kim Davis wasn't looking for this fight, but she is not running from it either. What militant secularists are almost certainly afraid of is what is coming to pass: courage is breeding courage. When other people might have cowered in fear, Kim took a stand. And today, millions of Americans stand with her and for the religious freedom upon which our nation was founded.
"Far from the media's portrayal, Kim isn't trying to impose her views on anyone, she is simply asking that her orthodox religious views be accommodated.
"The courage of Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis isn't just changing the conversation -- it's changing the political landscape. In places like Missouri, where state officials watched with horror as Davis was hauled off to jail for her Christian beliefs, leaders are moving quickly to protect their people from the same fate. The Supreme Court created this mess -- now it's incumbent on states to protect the victims mired in it.
"While the Court redefined marriage, it did not redefine the First Amendment. Thank goodness for people of courage like Kim Davis, who refuses to let religious liberty be trampled by legal tyranny. We applaud her. In the face of intense pressure, she's shown more courage than 99 percent of the elected officials in Kentucky," concluded Perkins.
Confirmed Values Voter Summit speakers include: Presidential candidates Dr. Ben Carson, Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Lindsey Graham, Gov. Mike Huckabee, Gov. Bobby Jindal, Sen. Rick Santorum, Gov. Scott Walker, and 2008 Republican Presidential Nominee Sen. John McCain.
Also, David and Jason Benham, Dr. Bill Bennett, Gov. Sam Brownback, Kentucky Clerk Casey Davis, Brigitte Gabriel, Rep. Louie Gohmert, bakers Aaron and Melissa Klein, Mark Levin, Rep. Mark Meadows, Lt. Col. Oliver North, Star Parker, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, and Fox News' Todd Starnes are among many other speakers to address attendees.
The 10th annual Values Voter Summit will be held from September 25-27 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. FRC Action's Values Voter Summit is cosponsored by AFA Action, American Values, Liberty Institute, Ohio Christian University School of Business and Government, and Family Research Council. The Values Voter Summit annually draws thousands of social conservatives from across the country. An exhibit hall, book signings, radio row, new media row, and much more will be packed into this three-day conference.
