Kent Animal Shelter Named 2009 Shelter of the Year
Kent Animal Shelter to be honored by North Shore Animal League America(R) in New York City this weekend
NEW YORK, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Kent Animal Shelter will be recognized on February 13, 2010 as Shelter of the Year by North Shore Animal League America® at the 55th Annual Purina® Pro Plan® Show Dogs of the Year® Awards, presented by Dogs In Review®, in New York City.
The Shelter of the Year award recognizes excellence and innovation in rescue programs or facilities. Kent Animal Shelter was selected for their progressive approach to rescue and their excellent community outreach, including a Pet Therapy program which reaches out to local senior centers and their low-cost spay-neuter program which performs over 4,000 spay/neuters per year. The shelter also features a retirement home for cats. Kent Animal Shelter, which participated in the rescue and rehoming efforts following Hurricane Katrina, was recently able to reunite a dog and its owners after 18 months apart and a forced relocation by the owner to another state.
Kent Animal Shelter was established in 1968 as a no-kill shelter and has remained such ever since. Over time, Kent Animal Shelter expanded to serve visitors from the tri-state area and beyond.
In addition to Kent Animal Shelter's award, the Show Dogs of the Year dinner will recognize the seven showdogs with the greatest number of Group Firsts in 2009, most of whom are going on to compete at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show next week. Along with those dogs, there will be Special Industry Awards honoring individuals whose dedication to the dog world is incomparable. These individuals will be honored for heightening public awareness of canine well-being and to elevating respect for the industry at large. Awards include Groomer of the Year, Veterinarian of the Year, Shelter of the Year and Trainer of the Year.
