KEMET Expands Its Polymer Hermetic Seal (PHS) Portfolio with First-to-Market Product Extensions
New 75 Volt extensions offer the highest voltage and deliverable energy with the lowest leakage current
GREENVILLE, S.C., March 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- KEMET Corporation (NYSE: KEM), a leading manufacturer of tantalum, ceramic, aluminum, film, paper and electrolytic capacitors, today announced its release of 75 volt product extensions for the T550 Polymer Hermetic Seal (PHS) Series of tantalum through-hole capacitors.

"KEMET is prepared operationally to support present and future demand for this high performance tantalum capacitor," said Conrado Hinojosa, KEMET Executive Vice President, Tantalum Business Group. "With the significant advantages over existing competing technologies, we anticipate a growing demand for our Polymer Hermetic Seal capacitor."
"PHS offers the highest total capacitance at low temperatures and high frequencies, surpassing wet tantalum performance and rendering it the most economical high power solution available," said Dr. Philip Lessner, KEMET Senior Vice President, Chief Technology and Marketing Officer. "Additionally, solid internal construction drastically improves shock and vibration capability, all within an approximately 25% lighter package than the equivalent wet tantalum capacitor."
"The T550 PHS Series has the highest rated voltage and energy, as well as the lowest DC leakage and ESR in the industry and the highest ripple current capability in its class," said Dr. Yuri Freeman, KEMET Technical Fellow. "Seven patents and applications went in to the development and manufacturing of this polymer tantalum capacitor with space grade reliability."
With its benign failure mode, T550 PHS Series products are ideal for use in high voltage power management applications such as buck boost converters, filtering, hold-up capacitors, and other high ripple current applications. Typical markets include alternative energy, industrial/lighting, telecommunications, and defense and aerospace. The T550 PHS Series solution provides a lower total cost of ownership versus wet tantalum, and complements KEMET's T540, T541 and T543 KO COTS Series.
Technical Information
Unique technologies and a KEMET patented screening technique provides the highest reliability to this product, which was confirmed by 10,000 hours of life test at rated voltage and 85°C without any parametric or catastrophic failures. Additionally, this part may be operated at voltages up to 80% of rated voltage with equivalent or better reliability than traditional MnO2 or wet tantalum capacitors operated at 50% of rated voltage.
