KEMET Announces Enhanced Military and Space Grade Ceramic Stacked Capacitors
GREENVILLE, S.C., May 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- KEMET Corporation (NYSE: KEM), a leading manufacturer of tantalum, ceramic, aluminum, film, paper and electrolytic capacitors, today announced additions to its military and space grade ceramic stacked capacitor product line. As part of the comprehensive KEMET Power Solutions (KPS) MIL Series, these devices are now available in MIL-PRF-49470 T-level high reliability product levels to complement KEMET's standard reliability offerings.
"The KPS MIL Series provides our customers with high frequency performance characteristics of ceramics in a reduced footprint using a stacked configuration," said Craig Scruggs, Military Product Manager for Ceramics. "As a result, Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) is extremely low at higher frequencies, allowing rapid energy discharge and excellent high frequency filtering when compared to other capacitor solutions."
Qualified under performance specification MIL-PRF-49470, the KPS MIL Series meets or exceeds the requirements of Defense Supply Center, Columbus (DSCC). With low ESR and Equivalent Series Inductance (ESL), they are ideally suited for Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS), pulse energy for input and output filtering, and snubber applications.
Technical Information
The KPS MIL Series is constructed using large chip multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), horizontally stacked and secured to a lead-frame termination system using a high melting point (HMP) solder alloy. The lead-frame isolates the MLCCs from the printed circuit board (PCB) while establishing a parallel circuit configuration. Mechanically isolating the capacitors from the PCB improves mechanical and thermal stress performance, while the parallel circuit configuration allows for bulk capacitance in the same or smaller design footprint.
Available in BX, BR, BQ, and X7R dielectrics, these devices are also offered in both surface mountable and through-hole configurations.
The MIL-PRF-49470 performance specification was developed as part of a cooperative effort between the U.S. Military, NASA and SMPS suppliers to produce a robust replacement for cancelled DSCC Drawing 87106.
