PITTSBURGH, Sept. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As the automotive industry continues to emphasize cost savings and weight reduction, growing numbers of mold makers and suppliers are turning to conformal cooling to optimize parts and production. Advances in technologies and materials are helping reduce molding cycle times and reject rates.
A broad range of Bayblend® polycarbonate acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC+ABS) grades by Covestro LLC – formerly Bayer MaterialScience – can be used in conformal cooling techniques and deliver higher-quality surfaces and style designs. A live demonstration using Bayblend® T85HG blend resins will be featured at the 2015 Conformal Cooling Conference at the Toshiba Technical Center (Chicago) on September 29. The demonstration will illustrate how conformal cooling combined with rapid heating and cooling injection molding creates broader styling features for interior automotive parts through enhanced process control.
"Bayblend® enables an excellent replication of the tool surface," said Lou Madrid, market development manager, Automotive and Transportation Interiors and Exteriors, Covestro LLC. "The technologies featured at the conference can be utilized to achieve a Class A surface with a high gloss and matte finish on the same part while eliminating weld lines."
Conformal cooling uses the shape or profile of the mold core or cavity to perform rapid uniform cooling for injection molding processes. It has been shown to reduce cycle time by 20-40 percent. The uniform cooling of the mold also lowers rejects and molded-in stress.
"Using conformal cooling channels is an effective tool to produce added value parts and, ultimately, a higher return on investment," said Ron Puvak, director of marketing, Plastics Technologies, Inc., global leader in plastic-based packaging development and co-host of the Conformal Cooling Conference.
"The conference will be a great opportunity for technical and management professionals at automotive and medical companies to gain further insights into conformal cooling and learn why it's a game changer in the molding industry," said Robert Beard, P.E., president of Robert A. Beard & Associates Inc., a well-known provider of technical, engineering and management support for plastics and co-host of the conference.
Covestro is an official sponsor of the Conformal Cooling Conference.
