Kaufman Legal Group a National Law Journal Elite Boutique Trailblazer
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Kaufman Legal Group today was named to the National Law Journal's list of "Elite Boutique Trailblazers."
National Law Journal says it compiles the list to "spotlight those making a big difference," and describes those chosen for the honor as having "shown a deep passion and perseverance in pursuit of their mission, having achieved remarkable successes along the way."
The firm serves as counsel to elected officials, candidates, political parties, non-profits and PACs on a wide range of campaign finance, election and governmental ethics issues. In the journal's special issue, Kaufman says he went out on his own because, "As I started to pursue political law, it became clear it didn't fit within the profile of the firms I was working at. I made a conscious decision to go out and do it myself in a small firm environment."
Earlier this year, firm principal Stephen J. Kaufman scored a significant victory in his defense of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who, with Kaufman's help, defeated a claim by a Republican opponent that he was ineligible to hold the office of Attorney General. In a case that went all the way to the California Supreme Court, Kaufman successfully fought off the claim that because Becerra was an inactive member of the State Bar while serving in Congress, he was ineligible to serve as Attorney General.
The "Elite Boutique Trailblazers" selection is the latest in a string of honors for the firm. Last month, Kaufman Legal Group was named a Daily Journal California Top Boutique firm; it also listed Stephen Kaufman as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California for 2018. In 2016 and 2017, Los Angeles Business Journal listed Mr. Kaufman among the 500 most influential people in Los Angeles. Previously, California Law Business named him one of California's top 20 attorneys under 40. Kaufman also received the California State Bar's Wiley W. Manuel Award for his commitment to pro bono legal work.
Kaufman is a recognized authority in the field of campaign finance and election law. He was a recount attorney for the Gore-Lieberman campaign in Florida following the 2000 Presidential election and in 2001, was appointed Chief Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Democratic Caucus Special Committee on Election Reform. He currently serves as Chair of the State Voting Modernization Board.
