DETROIT, June 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute has received the prestigious American College of Radiology (ACR)'s Lung Cancer Screening Center designation for its main hospital in midtown Detroit and at the Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills. This designation highlights Karmanos' commitment to providing valuable lung cancer screening services to the community at the highest standards of the radiology profession.
"Many people at Karmanos worked hard to achieve this distinction and we are very pleased to receive recognition of our high-quality screening services," said Shirish Gadgeel, M.D., leader of the Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos and professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine. "Karmanos is committed to practicing safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer."
To receive this elite center distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography for the chest, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of its lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. Procedures also must be in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs.
"This screening program will help detect many early lung cancers, when they are most treatable. It is a wonderful acknowledgement by the ACR that Karmanos utilizes the highest standards of radiology for the benefit of our patients," said Natasha Robinette, M.D., interim clinical service chief of Radiology.
The ACR, founded in 1924, is one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. The ACR devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective and accessible to those who need it. Its 36,000 members include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians.
