Kansas Student Senator Elected Secretary of the Senate of Boys Nation
WASHINGTON, July 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The chance to meet people from a variety of backgrounds drew Hap Waddell to The American Legion Boys Nation, and the resident of Marion, Kansas, said he will take advantage of the opportunity after he was elected Secretary of the Senate on Saturday.
Waddell, 17, a senior at Marion High School, is interested in pursuing a career as a journalist. As secretary of the senate at Boys Nation, he will maintain the journal of the Boys Nation Senate and examine all bills, amendments and resolutions before they leave the senate.
"Although I have never officially been a secretary of an officially recognized club, I think that I will be able to put in enough work to be one of the best that we have," Waddell said.
Waddell has served as student council president and class treasurer at Marion High School.
Each American Legion Boys Nation delegate represents his home state as a "senator". The "senators" caucus at the beginning of the session, organize into committees and conduct hearings on bills, allowing delegates to learn the proper legislative procedures according to the U.S. Senate.
American Legion Boys Nation provides aspiring young men with the opportunity to learn about the federal government while participating in a hands-on experience with the electoral process. The American Legion Auxiliary operates ALA Girls Nation for young women.
