Kansas' NPLEx Technology Making Significant Progress
Point-Of-Sale System Blocks Illegal Pseudoephedrine Sales But Protects Lawful Purchase
LUTHERVILLE, Md., Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) today highlighted the latest results achieved by Kansas's real-time, stop-sale pseudoephedrine (PSE) tracking system.
The National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) system automatically blocks unlawful pseudoephedrine purchases at the point of sale and helps flag meth offenders for law enforcement. Police officers and narcotics agents often set up NPLEx "watch lists" that notify them via email when a meth suspect attempts to make a PSE purchase. The most recent NPLEx data show that in Kansas, the technology has blocked the sale of 9,404 boxes of medicine containing pseudoephedrine since the start of 2014, keeping 25,096 grams out of the hands of potential meth criminals.
Additionally, Kansas sold 7.33 percent fewer boxes of PSE compared to the same period in 2013. The number of individual purchasers was further reduced by 6.80 percent.
"NPLEx is working extremely well in the state of Kansas," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of NADDI. "Since 2011, pharmacies in Kansas have coordinated with law enforcement to curb illegal pseudoephedrine purchases using this system. Tracking sales helps us keep these products out of the hands of criminals, catch those who try to circumvent the law, and preserve access to these medicines for law-abiding Kansans. By blocking over 9,000 boxes of pseudoephedrine, which might have led to illegal activity, Kansas is sending a strong message. We are stopping meth crime before it starts."
