Kansas City Barbeque Society donates 100,000 meals to food banks and charities across the nation
"100KCBS Meals Mission" hits its goal 5 months ahead of schedule
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) kicked off National BBQ month in May of 2014 with one goal: to cook and distribute 100,000 meals throughout America in 365 days. As of today, KCBS is pleased to announce it has not only met, but also exceeded its goal of the 100KCBS Meals Mission by distributing more than 112,000 meals in 219 days.
With over 20,000 members and more than 450 sanctioned BBQ events in its network, KCBS is the largest organization of BBQ enthusiasts in the world. By using its volunteers, judges, cook teams and event organizers, the nonprofit society provided fully cooked, world-class pork butts and other nonperishable food items to food banks and other charitable entities coast to coast, border to border.
"Hunger is a very real problem in our country and KCBS is working to do our part to help drive hunger out," said Carolyn Wells, executive director of KCBS. "I am humbled at the generosity of our KCBS members and contests."
A total of 47 events contributed to the 100KCBS Meals Mission. The following are the top five events that donated the greatest number of meals:
- World Food Championships (Las Vegas, Nev.) – 25,000
- American Royal (Kansas City, Mo.) – 16,000
- The National BBQ Cup (Cumming, Ga.) – 12,704
- Smokin' on the River (Jeffersonville, Ind.) – 3,948
- Minnesota in May (St. Paul, Minn.) – 3,440
Instrumental in making 100KCBS Meals Mission a success were several key stakeholders, including Feeding America, Good Samaritan, Kookers Kare, Operation BBQ Relief, Three Square and more.
