Kanopy's Video Platform Reaching Millions More Viewers
Kanopy's 30,000 films soon available to all North Americans who are members of a participating public library
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Kanopy, used by over 2,500 colleges across America, has just announced the expansion of its video platform into public libraries. Their collection of over 30,000 independent, documentary and cinematic gems from around the world will soon be available to any person in the U.S. or Canada that is a member of their local public library offering Kanopy.
"We believe public libraries should play an integral part in the film industry. Audiences should not just be limited to those who can afford monthly subscription fees nor should they be limited to an appetite of home video platforms and their associated exclusives," stated Olivia Humphrey, Kanopy founder and CEO. "We are proud to play an important and growing role in bringing cinematic stories to a broader audience so they remain a central part of North American cultural life."
Kanopy's award-winning platform streams titles from the Criterion Collection, Music Box Films, Kino Lorber, First Run Features and hundreds of other film distribution partners along with thousands of carefully selected independently-distributed films that are unavailable elsewhere. Public libraries can opt for pay-per-play, upfront license models or a hybrid of both.
"Kanopy is such an exciting addition to our library's digital collections. The range of independent, foreign language, classic and documentary films available through Kanopy is tremendous and creates a wonderful complement to our physical collection," said Rebecca Near, Collection Services Coordinator of Grand Rapids Public Library. "We're thrilled to be one of the first public libraries to partner with Kanopy and to offer our community access to such a rich selection of titles."
