Kalorama Report: Top 10 Tests In Physician Office Revealed
NEW YORK, Dec. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A new report from Kalorama Information says that coagulation tests, hemoglobin, lipids, and pregnancy are among the top tests performed in a physician office. Others are standard urinalysis, chemistry panels and blood counts. The report said over 2 billion worth of tests revenues for IVD companies come outside the hospitals, from laboratories within physician labs. The determination was made in Kalorama Information's latest 2014 edition of its physician office laboratory market study, Physician Office Laboratory Markets, 3rd Edition.
The report can be obtained at: http://www.kaloramainformation.com/redirect.asp?progid=86632&productid=8339073.
Physician Office Laboratory Markets said that tests used in physician office labs (POLs) are not specialized; they are generally clinical tools for disease screening, the diagnosis of common infectious diseases (e.g. strep, flu, mono, H. pylori, RSV), or routine monitoring tests for patients with common chronic diseases such as diabetes extensive review of secondary sources and regulatory filings suggests that clinical chemistry panels and parameters represent the fourth-most commonly performed test in U.S. POLs behind dipstick urinalysis, the complete blood count (CBC), and prothrombin time (PT). Kalorama says this does not represent great change in the market. Similar to the CBC and dipstick urinalysis, clinical chemistry parameters assess organ health and non-specifically screen for health conditions.
"In the past five years, the most performed POL tests have changed little with the exception of some recently CLIA waived infectious disease tests and the clinical phenomenon of vitamin D testing on small analyzers," said Emil Salazar, analyst of physician office labs for Kalorama.
Common parameters on low-volume chemistry analyzers used in POLs include ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, AMY, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, electrolytes, glucose, bilirubin, and uric acid. Electrolytes can also be tested on many POL chemistry analyzers.
The following tests make up the Top 10 Physician Office Lab tests, according to Kalorama:
1. Dipstick Urinalysis
2. Complete Blood Count (CBC)
3. Prothrombin Time (PT)
4. Chemistry Panels
5. Strep A Antigen Rapid Test
6. Glycosated Hemoglobin (HbA1c)
7. Individual Chemistries (whole blood glucose, single chemistry panel analytes)
8. Pregnancy (hCG urine)
9. Lipid Panels
10. Glucose (fingerprick)
The prospects of POL market growth also vary widely by geography. Kalorama Information has profiled the traditionally core country markets for POL tests and determined their future potential in light of recent regulatory tightening of fee schedules and reimbursement eligibility as well as other factors. In some cases, recent regulation threatens to tip competitive balance even more towards higher-volume labs, typically reference or commercial labs, across from smaller labs including POLs.
Kalorama Information's Physician Office Laboratory Markets presents readers not only the leading opportunities for IVD sales growth in the POL channel, but is also a valuable resource for determining competitive positioning within the channel vis-à-vis its leading players.
