OAKLAND, Calif., July 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Soon after Diana Parret of Fresno enrolled as a Kaiser Permanente member, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer. She underwent a laparoscopic hysterectomy just a month after her coverage took effect. Afterward, Parret received good news: She was cancer free and no further treatment was necessary.
Learn more about Parret's story and some of the many ways the nation's largest integrated health system has helped members lead healthier, more active lives in Kaiser Permanente's 2014 Annual Report and Community Benefit Snapshot, released today.
The annual report illustrates how Kaiser Permanente advances its mission to provide high-quality and affordable care, and to improve the health of members and their communities. In 2014, the organization continued to produce some of the best clinical performance scores, safety ratings and member-satisfaction rankings in the nation.
Kaiser Permanente continues to build the infrastructure to deliver 21st-century health care to meet the evolving needs of its patient population. In 2014 alone, it opened a new urgent care medical center in Georgia, three new hospitals in California and 20 new medical offices across its regions. Its $2.7 billion investment in construction, maintenance, and clinical technology in 2014 ensures that innovation and technology will continue to enhance the member experience while continuing to provide high-quality, affordable health care.
Kaiser Permanente's 177,445 employees and 17,791 physicians improved the lives of its members in 2014 by performing 224,943 inpatient surgeries, 1 million mammograms and 1.7 million colorectal cancer screenings. The 98,000 babies born to members in 2014 will celebrate their first birthdays this year – which also happens to be the 70th birthday of Kaiser Permanente. The organization has also grown to more than 10 million members` in the past year.
In 2014, Kaiser Permanente's Community Benefit Committee, chaired by Cynthia Telles, PhD, directed $2.2 billion to the communities it serves in eight states and the District of Columbia, improving access to high-quality health care for underserved populations, creating healthy environments and contributing to health knowledge on a national and global scale.
To assist low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals and families, the organization covered 85,800 individuals through its unique Charitable Health Coverage program (CHC), and accepted more than 260,000 applications to help those struggling to pay out-of-pocket medical expenses.
