Kaine Hails April Jobs Report, Criticizes Republicans for Cheering for Failure
April Jobs Report Best in Four Years Yet Republicans Use News to Attack, Play Politics
WASHINGTON, May 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This morning, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the April jobs report. According to the latest numbers, 290,000 jobs were created in April -- the largest addition in four years -- 231,000 of them in the private sector (the unemployment rate inched up slightly to 9.9 percent because an improving climate for jobs has brought more Americans into the workforce). In response, DNC Chairman Tim Kaine issued the following statement:

"Today's news that our economy added 290,000 jobs last month -- the most in four years -- is an encouraging sign that we're headed in the right direction and that our economic recovery continues apace. Since President took office, we have moved from recession to recovery from job losses to job growth. That quite simply would not have been the case were it not for President Obama's bold economic recovery efforts. From the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, to infrastructure investments, to incentives promoting hiring, the measures undertaken by President Obama and Democrats in Congress have not only stopped the American economy from getting worse, they are putting Americans back to work and contributing to three consecutive quarters of sustained economic growth.
"Unfortunately, Democrats had to struggle to enact these measures without the help of their Republican counterparts in Congress. In fact, they often had to overcome Republican opposition and obstructionism based not on substantive differences but rooted only in cynical political calculations. These jobs come not as a result of bipartisan efforts but in spite of Republican partisanship and political self-interest. In the weeks to come, Democrats will continue to focus like a laser beam on efforts grow the economy and continue to stimulate hiring.
"While there is much work to be done, today's report is cause for optimism. But you wouldn't know that if you listened to the politically charged, cynical and misleading statements of Republican leaders like John Boehner and Eric Cantor who are cheering for America to fail so their political party can succeed. These Republicans used the best jobs report in four years as a reason to attack the President and Democrats and John Boehner didn't even bother to mention in his statement that 290,000 jobs were created in April before incredibly claiming that Democrats are job killers. Our economy is on the rebound and Republicans are on the defensive because they chose obstruction and political pandering over doing the right thing and working with President Obama and Democrats to help turn things around. Republicans are learning the hard way that a political party has to offer more than obstruction, political games and criticism of the other side -- and their attacks today show that they are devoid of ideas and divorced from reality."
