About the Charities
The Fisher House Foundation is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes" built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful of times — during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease or injury. There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. For more information. visit fisherhouse.org.
Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum / Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund
For more than 30 years, the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid sailed the oceans in defense of our nation and our freedom. Today, as the centerpiece of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and a national historic landmark, Intrepid serves as a symbol for the heroism, leadership, strength and endurance of those who served on her in wartime and in peace. The mission of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. For more information, visit intrepidmuseum.org.
Intrepid is also home to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, a national nonprofit organization established in 2000 to provide support for the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and their families. In January 2007, the Fund completed construction of the Center for the Intrepid, a $55-million world-class, state-of the-art physical rehabilitation center serving amputee and severe burn patients at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
The Fund is currently addressing another critical issue faced by our wounded troops: the treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The National Intrepid Center of Excellence in Bethesda, Md., a $60-million facility, will be our nation's primary center for research, diagnosis and treatment of TBI and has been fast tracked to open in 2010.
