Justice Department Officials Thank Congressman Fattah for Leading on Law Enforcement Funding
WASHINGTON, Nov. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Officials of major federal law enforcement agencies thanked Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), the top Democratic appropriator for the Justice Department, for leading the successful effort to fund federal enforcement agencies for the coming year.
Director Robert S. Mueller III of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Marshals Service Director Stacia A. Hylton, on behalf of 17,842 FBI agents and marshals, thanked the Philadelphia Congressman for his leadership and advocacy of law enforcement funding as part of the "minibus" appropriation bill that President Obama signed last week.
Fattah responded that it was a "bipartisan effort," with the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) and related agencies, under Chairman Frank Wolf (R-VA), working together to provide necessary resources for law enforcement. Fattah consulted with Mueller on Capitol Hill earlier this fall on the FBI's budget needs.
Fattah has been active in visiting law enforcement agencies and meeting officials in his capacity as the senior Democrat on the CJS subcommittee. On Nov. 17, he visited newly-opened facilities of the FBI's Terrorist Screening Center in Vienna VA. He will visit the FBI Academy training facilities at Quantico, VA. Earlier this month, Fattah met with and was briefed by Acting Director B. Todd Jones of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tax, Firearms and Explosives in the Justice Department.
The multi-agency "minibus" appropriation provides increases for federal law enforcement above the FY 2011 level for the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, Drug Enforcement Administration, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms within the Justice Department. In addition, the legislation provides $198.5 million for Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), mostly for COPS hiring, and $2.2 billion for state and local law enforcement grants.
