HOUSTON, Oct. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Nov. 5, the Johnson Space Center Contractors Environmental Partnership will host an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling and document shredding event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Space Center Houston parking lot. This event is open and free to the public and allows anyone in the community to dispose of all electronics in an environmentally friendly manner.

Sims Recycling Solutions is sponsoring the event and will recycle the collected material as a certified responsible recycler. Shred Pro will provide document-shredding services at the drop-off point. Several NASA JSC contractors will provide support for the event.
"Many electronic products can be recycled in efforts to help protect the environment, especially since certain electronic components contain materials that could be classified as hazardous. This event provides the community with a free, environmentally friendly way to discard old and/or broken electronics." said Christal Banks, environmental engineer for Earth Resources Technology at JSC. "This will be the second collection event that will be held this year, and it comes at a perfect time. November celebrates Texas Recycles Day, and with the cooler weather, community members can clean out all their old documents and e-waste to make room for all the holiday celebrations."
There is no limit to the amount of items people can bring. Examples of accepted material, both working and non-working, include:
- Personal computers (includes desktop, PCs, laptops and workstations)
- Monitors and flat panel displays
- Printers (ink and laser)
- All-in-Ones and scanners
- Digital cameras
- Handheld computers and portable music devices
- Cords
- Digital entertainment and telecommunications equipment (VCRs and cell phones)
Unacceptable items:
- Major appliances including microwave ovens, TVs, washers and dryers
- Paint, oil or car batteries
- Equipment containing radioactive materials, free-flowing liquids, chlorofluorocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls or other "hazardous wastes"
Items collected will be recycled in North America instead of shipping materials to developing nations, and all materials will be handled in a legally compliant, data secure, traceable and environmentally sustainable manner.
All documents in all quantities will be accepted for the document shredding services. Boxes and containers will be returned to clients at time of service since shredding will take place at the drop of point where participants can watch. Please make sure that all documents are:
- Free of metal binders (paper clips, staples and small wire bindings are acceptable);
- Free of other contaminants; and
- Dry.
