Josh Shapiro Named Chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Governor Tom Wolf announced that he named Montgomery County Commissioners' Chairman Josh Shapiro the Chair of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency is a collaboration of public servants and private citizens representing all aspects of criminal justice and juvenile justice. The Commission's mission is to enhance the quality and coordination of criminal and juvenile justice systems, to facilitate the delivery of services to victims of crime, and to increase the safety of our communities. PCCD initiates, validates, and financially supports justice-related programs put forth by practitioners and experts in the justice system. PCCD focuses on research, policy, planning, training, evidence-based programming, technology, outreach, and support services.

Biography of Josh Shapiro
Josh Shapiro was elected Montgomery County Commissioner in 2011 and was elected unanimously to Chair the three-member Board on January 3, 2012. As the Commission Chairman, Josh helped lead a dramatic turnaround in Montgomery County by eliminating a large budget deficit, reducing overall debt, and replenishing the County reserve fund. As Commissioner, Josh directs the county Public Safety Department, has collaborated with local law enforcement on a number of important issues in the region, and recently formed a multi-disciplinary task force to address the growing problem of heroin and opioid overdoses. 

Prior to his election in Montgomery County, Shapiro represented the 153rd Legislative District in the state House for seven years. In the House, Rep. Shapiro was a leader on the Judiciary Committee on a variety of law and justice issues. Before serving in the state legislature, Josh served as a Congressional staffer in Washington, D.C. where at age 25 he became, at the time, the youngest person on Capitol Hill to serve as a Congressional Chief of Staff.

More recently, Chairman Shapiro was the vice-chair of the Governor's Budget Deficit and Fiscal Stabilization Task Force during the transition.
