Johnstone Supply Leads TRC's 2nd Quarter Thermostat Recycling Tally

FORT WASHINGTON, Pa., Aug. 6, 2018  /PRNewswire/ -- Thermostat Recycling Corp. (TRC) released its second-quarter results of collection locations that have recycled thermostats between April 1 and June 30.

Johnstone Supply leads the list of 345 companies, with 914 individual locations that recycled at least one thermostat during the second quarter. Placing second was R.E. Michel, followed by Wheelabrator. The top 10 list and the number of thermostats they collected are:

"The steady success of collection efforts demonstrates the effectiveness of TRC's long-term plan for reducing the number of mercury containing thermostats," said TRC's Executive Director, Ryan Kiscaden. He acknowledges that as the overall number of recycled thermostat units collected increases, the cost per unit continues to escalate.

"We face the unintended consequences of success that comes with a nearly two-decade commitment to removing mercury containing thermostats from the environmental stream," Kiscaden said. "The increase per unit cost is the price of success. Our manufacturer partners have borne the expense to ensure that we remove as many old, mercury containing thermostats as possible that remain in homes and business."

The recycling process draws attention during this period as TRC launched its annual BMOP competition — usually during a six-month period — which identifies the top wholesalers in the HVACR industry.  This year, TRC rebranded as Banish Mercury Off the Planet. TRC reveals the winners of the contest at HARDI's annual conference in December in Austin, Texas.  "This year we just may name our first BMOP Masters champion," said Kiscaden.  "Let's just say, we hope that the winning wholesaler looks good in green."
