MILWAUKEE, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), a global leader in delivering products, services and solutions that increase energy efficiency in buildings, today launched a new microsite, Give Five for Greener Living – www.johnsoncontrols.com/givefivegreen – designed to promote actionable ways to help make saving energy and water at home, work and school an engaging and fun experience. By taking five minutes a day or by doing five things a week, people can help save money and help the planet.
"As a global leader in energy and environmental practices that provide comfortable, safe and sustainable learning, living and work spaces – Give Five for Greener Living is a natural extension for Johnson Controls to educate and engage building occupants about saving energy, natural resources and saving money," says Bruno Biasiotta, vice president, Johnson Controls Energy Solutions, Americas. "Give Five for Greener Living takes a simple approach aimed at positive efforts and allows people to compare their success with others."
To develop the website, Johnson Controls examined research that explores how public engagement and communications change behaviors related to energy and environmental matters. The site focuses on five best practices:
- Start small. By giving five minutes a day or trying five energy saving measures, people are more apt to make changes in their behaviors.
- Be specific. The site allows visitors to tailor efforts for home, school or work to meet their specific needs.
- Go local, then global. The site suggests local websites so people can find ways to have an impact in their local communities before moving on to consider the bigger picture.
- Have fun. By offering games, creative activities and even jokes, all ages can have fun while learning ways to save money and help the environment.
- Share ideas. Printable posters and checklists are tools visitors can share to help others find simple ways to change their behavior and promote their commitment to living green.
To celebrate the launch of Give Five for Greener Living, five people who submit ideas on how they 'give five' will be randomly selected to receive a Kindle® wireless reading device, a solar backpack, a Planet Earth & The Blue Planet Seas of Life DVD set, a solar universal charger, or an iPod Nano®. Ideas must be submitted by October 31, 2010 to qualify for the drawing. Details are available on the website.
"We challenge everyone – at home, at work or at school – to share their ideas with others in the Give Five for Greener Living community so more people will be inspired to take action," Biasiotta says. "It's simple: If enough people do five little things, together we can have a big impact."
The microsite also offers interactive learning through IgniteGreen, a set of six simple modules targeted at home owners, apartment/dormitory residents, young children, middle and high school students, teachers and employees. After participants respond to questions about their energy and water efficiency actions, they immediately learn how they measure up with their peers. Additionally, they find out how much they can save and how they can impact the Earth. For instance, taking reusable bags for groceries and other retail items reduces the use of plastic bags, which take up to 500 years to degrade in landfills.
