John Wallace, President and CEO of Deluxe, Brian Mullins, Founder and Board Member of DAQRI, and Mayor Eric Garcetti to receive UCLA IS Associates Distinguished Executive Leadership Award

"The IS Associates Executive Leadership Award is particularly special in that it has over a 30-year history and represents a spectacular list of leaders in Southern California who have leveraged technology to drive exceptional business value," said Jim Davis, Vice Provost of Information Technology and Chief Academic Technology Officer at UCLA.  "As we embrace an increasingly digital world of opportunity and challenge, we are excited this year to expand the award not only to recognize business transformation but also startups and digital change in the public sector."  

This year, the award was expanded to three categories in recognition of the growth of start-ups in Silicon Beach—along with digital disruption in the public sector with open data and Internet of Things (IoT) initiatives that improve government transparency and citizen services.

"By highlighting the commitment of all three of these leaders, the UCLA IS Associates is recognizing the essential role that technology plays in every organization to enable broader access, drive greater efficiency, and optimize information sharing," said Don Olender, Executive Director of UCLA IS Associates and former CIO of Wells Fargo Capital Group.

John Wallace will receive the Corporate Enterprise award. He is President and CEO of Deluxe, a global services and technology company enabling the worldwide market for professionally created video through unmatched scale, technology and capabilities.

Wallace has driven the company's evolution, elevating technology as a key strategy enabler in the company's plan to develop cloud-based virtual services and platforms as well as forming Deluxe Technologies — a dedicated software development group designed to harness existing in-house products and build new capabilities and technologies. Innovative applications of information technology are integral to operations at Deluxe.

The company has adopted technology to transform from a film lab to a leading global, cloud-based virtual services company. Now, more than ever, the world's leading content creators, broadcasters, OTTs, and distributors rely on the technologies Deluxe develops to create, transform, and distribute entertainment in the global market.

The Start-Up/Entrepreneurial Award will be provided to Brian Mullins.  He is an innovator who is relentless in the use of technology to empower people and unleash their full potential. Throughout his career, Brian's entrepreneurial endeavors have leveraged mixed reality technologies to redefine what is humanly possible.

As founder and advisor of DAQRI, an augmented reality company headquartered in Los Angeles, he created exponential change with products that transform human performance and level the playing field for millions around the world. Brian is a frequently sought expert on emerging technology and in 2016 was invited to speak at both the White House and the first Congressional hearing on Augmented Reality.

Mayor Eric Garcetti will receive the Public Sector award. Under Mayor Garcetti's leadership, the City of Los Angeles has embraced the use of technology to drive innovation. Mayor Garcetti has focused on data-driven policy and management, and introduced a number of key, award-winning technology initiatives that have helped connect and deliver City services to the community. Among them include launching a new 311 system and MYLA311 mobile app for City Services, creating L.A.'s Open Data Portal, GeoHub, and Business Assistance Virtual Network, and establishing the nation's first urban Cyber Intrusion Command Center. 

The City of LA and UCLA were key partners in the Department of Energy-sponsored Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute award and the location of its national headquarters in Los Angeles. Mayor Garcetti continues to build on the work to use emerging technologies to better communicate with everyday Angelenos, and drive innovation in transportation, public safety, sustainability, and economic development.

The awards ceremony will take place at the IS Associates' Executive Leadership Award Dinner on November 9, 2017 at UCLA's Carnesale Commons. UCLA IS Associates gratefully acknowledge Laserfiche and Workday for supporting the event.
