John S. Pistole to be honored with Penton's ATW Leadership Excellence Award
Former TSA Administrator's work to be recognized at Airline Industry Achievement Awards
NEW YORK, Jan. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Penton's Air Transport World, announced today that retired TSA Administrator John S. Pistole is the recipient of this year's ATW Leadership Excellence Award.
During his tenure, Pistole shifted the focus of TSA away from treating all airline passengers as equal threats to using intelligence and risk-based analysis when screening passengers. He implemented the launch of Pre-Check, which radically changed TSA's post-9/11 airport screening approach. The program identifies "known passengers" who pose little risk and allows them to move through separate, expedited screening lanes and who can keep their shoes and light outer wear on and their computers and compliant gel bags in cases. TSA thus has a much smaller pool of "unknown" passengers on which it can focus its attention and resources. "One-size-fits-all was necessary after 9/11…but thanks to two key enablers, technology and intelligence, we're able to move toward a risk-based security model," Pistole said when rolling out Pre-Check.
By the end of 2014, Pre-Check was available at more than 120 US airports to passengers traveling on 11 airlines. "It helps us do our job" to segment out large numbers of known passengers who voluntarily give information to TSA, Pistole explained. "It allows us to be more precise and tailored in our approach," he said.
"John is deservedly held in the highest regard by airline and airport chiefs worldwide for his dedication and common-sense approach to security, which many see as a good model for other regions," ATW Editor-in-Chief Karen Walker said. "His leadership at TSA has enabled millions of people to enjoy more hassle-free air travel while ensuring the highest standards of security. It will be an honor to present John with his Award at our gala event in February."
"It is with great pride that I accept this prestigious award on behalf of the more than 60,000 TSA employees who every day come to work dedicated to protecting our nation's transportation system. The risk-based security model, particularly TSA Pre-Check, is widely accepted by travelers throughout the world. It is the result of a series of initiatives designed and implemented by a highly talented and motivated TSA workforce whom I had the honor of leading for more than four and one-half years," said John S. Pistole, TSA Administrator (retired) and now President of Anderson University.
Other winners of the 41st Airline Industry Achievement Awards include Southwest Airlines (Airline of the Year); Air Astana (Airline Market Leader of the Year); Ethiopian Airlines (Regional Airline of the Year); Spirit Airlines (Value Airline of the Year); Lufthansa (Eco-Airline of the Year); Boeing (Eco-Company of the Year); London Heathrow Terminal 2, The Queen's Terminal, and Star Alliance (Airport of the Year) and L-3 Link Simulation & Training (Aviation Technology Achievement).
