BRADENTON, Fla., Jan. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Anthony Hampton, Jr., a sophomore at John Rogers High School in Spokane, Wash., won a $10,000 scholarship at the Champs Sports Bowl, which took place on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

Hampton, one of three finalists, submitted an essay as part of the nationwide "Champs Sports Champion Scholarship Challenge" contest this past October-November. The challenge asked contestants to show how they are a "Champs Sports Champion" on the field, in the classroom, or in the community.
Three finalists (Hampton, Andrew Tallent from Chattanooga, Tenn. and Nathaniel Duker from Columbia, Mo.) were chosen and each won a $5,000 scholarship as well as a trip for two to the Champs Sports Bowl. A panel judged the finalists' essays based on creativity, content and originality, and during half-time named Hampton the grand prize winner, doubling his scholarship to $10,000. In Hampton's essay, he describes his parents' unfaltering support and commitment to his education and athletics. Hampton believes that a true "champ" is someone who whether he or she wins or loses the game, can still look in the mirror and be proud of the decent individual he or she has become. Upon graduating in 2013, Hampton aspires to play football for USC.
At this year's Bowl, the North Carolina State Wolfpack beat the West Virginia Mountaineers 23-7. The Mountaineers and Wolfpack have squared off nine times in their history, but this was the first meeting in 22 years. For the seventh consecutive year, Champs Sports is the title sponsor of the formerly named Tangerine Bowl.
"We are always looking for new and innovative ways to provide our customers with unique experiences to show our gratitude for their loyalty and patronage," said Frank Bracken, vice president of marketing at Champs Sports.
