John Abele, Co-Founder of Boston Scientific, Honored for Lifetime Achievement

MDEA Award to be Presented at MD&M East at Javits Convention Center in New York

SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- John Abele, will receive the Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award during its annual ceremony on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at the MD&M East event at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, 4 p.m. in Room 1E15 – 17.

Abele founded Boston Scientific Corporation, a medical device company, with his partner Peter Nicholas, in 1979. Boston Scientific led the medical device field with new products such as the steerable catheter, and later with other developments that disrupted the way many medical procedures were performed. Since his retirement from the company, he has been active as an educator and philanthropist. He serves as vice chairman of For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), which focuses on science education for young people. FIRST was founded by inventor Dean Kamen, the 2014 MDEA Lifetime Achievement Award winner.

Prior to the award ceremony, Abele will be the keynote speaker at the MD&M East Center Stage theater at 3 p.m., which is free to all who attend the event.

In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award, MDEA awards will be presented to manufacturers and suppliers for medical devices in ten different categories, recognizing the most significant advances in product design and engineering in the past year that improve the quality of healthcare.

MD&M East and its co-located trade events, EastPack, Atlantic Design & Manufacturing, ATX East, PLASTEC East, Quality Expo, and HBA Global, will be at the Javits Convention Center June 9-11, 2015, with a large expo hall and a full slate of conference sessions, including Design Innovation for Medical Devices, 3D Printing for Medical Device Design & Manufacturing, Integrated Quality Management, and a three-day track on Market Strategy and Product Development in the fields of health and beauty.
