Joel Curran Named Managing Director of MSL New York
Industry Veteran Regarded as Agency Builder & Collaborator
NEW YORK, Sept. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Joel Curran, MSLGROUP North America's managing director of Midwest operations, has been appointed managing director of MSL New York, the largest office in the MSLGROUP global network. Curran, who tripled the size of MSL Chicago during the recession, takes on responsibility for nearly 200 staff and some of MSLGROUP's most important client relationships. An industry veteran who has worked at agencies in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, Curran also spent more than 10 years with The Walt Disney Company across several business units. His appointment was made by Renee Wilson, the new president of MSLGROUP North America. The position has been vacant since Wilson's own elevation to chief client officer earlier this year.

"Joel Curran is the ideal choice for this position as he embraces the revolution in the marketplace. He has been instrumental in helping MSLGROUP evolve into a next-generation, contemporary agency that offers a full array of communication and engagement services from digital and social media to public relations, experiential marketing and advertising. Joel is a strategic builder with a perfect blend of corporate communications and consumer marketing skills who has counseled top brands and companies like Disney, GM, Owens Corning and Riddell," said Wilson.
As managing director of the agency's Midwest region, Curran oversaw the Chicago office and operations in Detroit. Since taking over the helm, Curran has helped to win marquee brands such as Daisy Brands, Delta Faucet Co., DeVry University, GM regional assignments, Mazola and Sealy Mattresses. At the same time, work from the region was recognized with top industry awards. In 2010, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Chicago Chapter named him "Chicago Public Relations Professional of the Year."
"I'm honored to have been asked to lead MSL New York, an integral part of the rapidly growing MSLGROUP global network. I've worked closely with Renee for years, and I'm excited to be working with her and the talented MSL New York team in creating dynamic offerings that will help our clients grow their business while we continue to build a cutting-edge agency equipped to anticipate their needs," Curran said.
Curran also was the executive client engagement director for the company's long-standing GM relationship. He worked closely with Publicis Groupe sister agencies to create holistic communications solutions for clients. A search for Curran's replacement is underway.
Curran is a former managing director of CKPR, the one-time PR arm of independent ad agency Cramer-Krasselt. Over nine years, he helped convert a network of independent offices into a unified, newly-branded operation that became one of the nation's top mid-size PR independents. During his tenure, The Holmes Report named CKPR "Consumer Agency of the Year" and PRWeek named it an "Agency to Watch."
During his decade at The Walt Disney Co., Curran was marketing point person during the company's year-long acquisition of the Angels baseball club. He was also director of marketing synergy for Walt Disney Television, manager of marketing synergy for Walt Disney World and an associate brand manager for the Disney Studios theme park.
Accredited by the Public Relations Society of America, Curran was formerly on the executive committees of PRSA's Counselors Academy, the Council of PR Firms and PRSA's Chicago Chapter. He currently serves on the Board of Advisors at the University of North Carolina's School of Journalism and Mass Communications. He also has worked as an adjunct instructor in public relations and marketing at the University of Chicago's Graham School.
