"The entire organization looks forward to the growth and progress of HSC under Joe Pelayo's stewardship and we, the outgoing officers of the board, remain committed to providing him every assistance we can to ensure the continued success of HSC," said Dr. Hogg. "I am proud to relinquish my duties as Chairman to such a dedicated individual."
"It is an honor to be entrusted with the leadership of an organization that is investing in the future leadership of Texas; it is a responsibility that I do not take lightly," said Pelayo, who has served in various capacities with organizations dedicated to improving the educational and business opportunities for the Austin Hispanic community. He co-chaired the Hispanics in Partnership program at Applied Materials, Inc., established a scholarship fund for high performing, low-income college bound students and is also currently serving on the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
According to HSC, Latino children represented approximately 91 percent of the public school enrollment increase over the past decade. They are already over 50 percent of Texas' incoming kindergarten students. However, the most notable statistic is a considerable number of these students are from low-income households; an issue HSC is committed to address and overcome if Texas and the nation are to produce a well-educated and productive workforce.
