Job Postings in Higher Education Grow but at Slower Pace; Postings for Part-Time Faculty Jump 65 Percent
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Aug. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Advertisements for job openings in higher education rose 25.2 percent in the second quarter of 2011, according to a new report from HigherEdJobs, the leading source for jobs and career information in academia. While strong, the rate of growth was considerably less than the year before, when job postings for colleges and universities rose 48.2 percent. (http://www.higheredjobs.com/link.cfm?q=2&y=2011&id=3)
Although hiring is up at all levels, colleges and universities continued to focus their hiring on administrators and executives rather than faculty, according to HigherEdJobs. And, most of the growth in faculty postings was for part-time positions, not full-time. Job postings for part-time faculty jumped 65.1 percent during Q2 2011, while postings for full-time faculty increased only 6 percent.
The number of jobs in higher education grew in Q2, but at a slower pace. According to analysis by HigherEdJobs of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, the number of jobs in higher education rose 2.9 percent in Q2 2011, and that was considerably less than the 3.3 percent growth a year earlier. Higher education jobs represented about 1.3 percent of all non-farm jobs in the U.S. economy during Q2 2011; in 2008, it was about 1.1 percent.
Hiring and new jobs at community colleges in Q2 2011 continued to outpace growth at four-year institutions, according to HigherEdJobs. There were about 11,200 more junior college jobs in Q2 2011 than in Q2 2010, an 11.5 percent increase.
The report examines job posting data from colleges and universities that have been continuously subscribed to the company's unlimited posting plan for four years or longer, a cohort of over 700 schools, as well as data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
HigherEdJobs is the leading source for jobs and career information in academia. During 2010, more than 4,250 colleges and universities posted over 79,000 faculty, administrative and executive job postings to the company's website. HigherEdJobs receives 1 million unique visitors a month. HigherEdJobs is published by Internet Employment Linkage, Inc. and is headquartered in State College, PA.
